Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, a dead volcanic mountain, standing at a towering height of 5,895 m (14,340 ft) ASL, is the world’s highest standalone mountain. It is also the tallest mountain in Africa, with Uhuru Peak on Kibo, as the highest point.
This snow-capped mountain is one of the ‘Seven Summits’, which are the highest mountains on each of the traditional seven continents.
Ascending the heights of Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the most sought-after adventure undertakings by many.
Although, not a technical mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking is not ‘a walk in the park’, and would-be climbers need to prepare themselves adequately; financially, mentally, physically, and with the appropriate gear.
During the trek or hike from the bottom to the top, climbers will experience five different climatic zones. The climatic conditions change, which may be warm and humid, from the lower slopes and montane forests to the summit which may be bitterly cold, with some ice, glaciers, and snow.

The Right Documents or Paperwork
The right documents/ paperwork could be the first consideration as this is what will permit a prospective climber entry into Tanzania and access to the mountain.
- Valid passport
- Tanzanian Visa
This may be obtained online or at the point of entry on arrival into the United Republic of Tanzania
- Receipts for the trip
- Insurance documents
- Immunization documents
The Right Technical Attire
The right kind of attire during Mount Kilimanjaro trekking will not only offer comfort but will also help in safety and the success chances of the entire adventure.
Upper Body
- A breathable waterproof jacket with a hood
- An insulated, synthetic, or down jacket with a hood
- A pair of soft fleece or soft-shell jacket
- A short-sleeved shirt, preferably moisture-wicking
- At least 3 moisture-wicking long-sleeved shirts (with hoods if possible)
Lower Body
- 2 pairs of hiking pant/ trousers
- A pair of breathable waterproof pants
- A pair of warm fleece pants
- Long moisture-wicking underwear
- At least 4 moisture-wicking underwear
- A pair of shorts (this is optional)
- A sports bra (for women/ladies)
Footwear
- Sturdy hiking boots or shoes that are warm and waterproof
- Some woolen or synthetic socks
Headgear
- A brimmed hat for protection against the sun
- A warm knit hat
- A neck gaiter or scarf for protection against dust, wind and for warmth
Handwear
- A pair of gloves, one warm and waterproof while the other should be light
The Right Equipment
Although not regarded as a technical mountain, there are some equipment required when undertaking Mount Kilimanjaro trekking.
- A warm sleeping bag
- Collapsible/ adjustable trekking poles
- A headlamp with extra batteries
- A backpack to hold some personal necessities
- A duffel bag to carry other stuff that the porter will carry
Other optional equipment are an inflatable mattress and pillow
The Right Accessories and Vital Items
Since Mount Kilimanjaro trekking is not a one-day undertaking, it is prudent to pack some necessary accessories and items that would be useful.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- A waterproof backpack cover (optional)
- A Water Bottle
- Some toiletries
- Hand sanitizer and wet wipes
- Some insect repellant
- Basic First Aid Kit and some prescriptions
- A water bladder
- A pee bottle, to avoid leaving the tent at night (recommended)
- Flashlight/ torch
Optional:
- A camera with enough batteries
- Some high calorie lightweight snacks
- Some electrolytes in powder or pill form

The luggage must be as light as possible, packed in a soft duffel bag, backpack, or even a sports bag. These bags are easy to carry and easily fit in both tents and vehicles.
A backpack is good for carrying essential items such as documents, cash, and small gadgets.
