Tanzania is not only famous for its wonderful wildlife and pristine parks, but it also reputed for trekking and hiking. This giant of African tourism, with its prestigious national parks and magnificent mountains presents both spectacular safari experiences as well as exciting trekking adventures.
Trekking in Tanzania undoubtedly revolves around Kilimanjaro Mountain for many people. However, with so many mountains, both standalones and ranges, there are so many trekking and hiking options in Tanzania.
Ranking at number one, is the world-famous Kilimanjaro Trekking. Mount Kilimanjaro’s Uhuru Peak is the highest in Africa and the towering Kilimanjaro, is the tallest standalone mountain in the world. Mount Meru, dubbed ‘Kilimanjaro’s Little Brother’ presents another awesome trekking experience in Arusha, the ‘Geneva of Africa’.
Other notable Tanzania trekking and hiking attractions in the Northern Circuit are the Usambara Mountain range, which is best known for its different trekking challenges, and for blending trekking and cultural tourism. There is also Ol Doinyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God”, in Maasai language. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area, on the other hand presents trekking experiences with the Ol Moti Crater and Empakai Crater trails.
Mount Longido is another trekking attraction on the Northern Circuit for enthusiasts who prefer the off-the-beaten routes kind of adventures.
The Western Circuit trekking and hiking adventures are found in the remote Mahale Mountains, whose Chimpanzee Treks are one of a kind globally.
The Uduzungwa Mountains in the Southern Circuit, though a least known trekking destination in Tanzania, is ideal for intermediate trekkers. The mountain range has beautiful waterfalls and boast of ten species of primates.
The beautiful country of Tanzania has trekking and hiking opportunities throughout the year, but not all trails are accessible.
In the rainy seasons, which fall between November and mid-December, as well as between end of March and May, some trekking trails become impassable. Dry seasons from June to October, are therefore, by far the most ideal periods for a Tanzania trekking.
